The Prize celebrates successful initiatives undertaken by local governments and stimulates others to follow suit. Moreover, it aims at generating international public attention for the role local governments play in ensuring sustainable and peaceful development. Previous winner

Lamu County, Kenya, has won the UCLG Peace Prize 2026. The international jury awarded the prize for the Lamu Peace Model, which brings together disaster risk management, social cohesion, climate adaptation, the prevention of violent extremism, maritime safety and refugee inclusion. The UCLG Peace Prize is awarded to projects from local governments that stimulate a culture of peace.
